Concentration pieces

My concentration is deconstruction of the human mind

WOW! lots to talk about. first up is the piece with the red white and blue. titled ameritard. I was flipping through a book of portraits when i came across this fantastic photo of a guy from new york holding the american flag. so i pulled out some paper and started drawing. i took some key ideas from the photo, and then threw my own little spin on it. i played off of how wierd the guy looked, and the fact that he was holding an american flag. i tried doing the whole making the eye follow something, so i carefullyplanned where the yellow went and how the whole movement was down and to the right. i also just distorted the reality and made it all grotesque.
Second is the martini man piece. they other 2 pieces actually go together. its a top half and a bottom half. i also started out with this one by looking through a portrait book. this particular photograph was of a man in his kitchen sippin on some martini. gettin faded. i took the over all posture of the man, and modified the line quality and colored it differently. i also did the top half of the man on one sheet, and the bottom half of the man on another. crazy huh. i also did all the color on one half of both the top and bottom. the value and errything is really partially distributed on purpose. added a dimension to the character. implying that i partially knew him. he was very to himself, not very talkitive. mysterious

Ha ha ha I like it already! You already have a great title for it! Ha Ameritard!

I know it’s bad to use a word you’re not quite sure what it means to describe something but I’m going to go for it! I’m really impressed with the aesthetics of you pieces. The lines really have beauty, despite the lines sometimes making quite the estranged pictures.

Anyway, back to Ameritard I think this is quite the fine piece of artwork. Your lines make for quite the interesting movement in a piece and your use of the yellow helps, as well. Although you don’t have gradients to show value the mere solid color choices serve its purpose well. I want to argue there’s nice balance, as well. I hear when you have good balance / composition, you can flip the paper any way you want and it feels stable. Well, I feel the same can apply to this piece. This is because I also heard that a picture should be dominated mainly but lights. (I don’t recall where I just did so work with me) Therefore, even though you have bold colors and lines overpowering one side the mere usage of white space (negative space?) helps to make the picture nicely balanced. There is also rhythm. You have lights (white space) and darks (shaded spaces/ colors). That must, also, help with the movement. I must admit, I’d usually throw a fit over such a piece because it isn’t fully colored. (my philosophy is: the more color the more complete it is) However, in this case, I find it quite fine as is.

As for martini man and legs… that is a different story. I really feel as if it needs more added to be completed. Maybe when the two pieces are being put together, however they’re going to be put together, I’ll better understand. But, as standalone pieces, they need some help. In my personal opinion Martini Man needs more lines. I feel as if the piece is incomplete because my brain is struggling to add in some of the lines in order to make a complete figure. That, or more color to help my brain. I don’t know if it’s like that to help play into your concentration but, as an individual piece without an explanation; it might need a bit more added to it. (Not too much though) Same goes for the pants. Well, actually, no. The pants have enough lines that my brain doesn’t have to struggle. But, I cannot lie, what is the point of the pants? And how does it tie into your concentration?

I suppose the last thing I have to ask is: can you elaborate on your concentration? I want to take a stab and ask if you’re trying to give the viewer’s brain a teaser? (like how my brain tries to better fill in Martini man and his missing arm)

Daaahhh okay I kinda take back what you said about Martini man. I feared I glossed over your description too fast and... low and behold... I did. I get what you mean by the who distant man. However, I still think that it might be better to add more lines to strengthen the piece as a whole. That's all. As it stands, however, it hits your concentration requirements.

mmm Mat you are a little hard to critique, mostly cause your work is very distinct and unique. Obviously you know how to use line to create rhythm and intrigue. The creepy guy is great. The stripes add interest and give it a bit of variety, however they make the piece a bit unbalanced and the colors you used in the stripes aren't giving for me. The second piece is a little dull for you. The pants are boring, with the same color and line size all over. Your eyes don't know where to look and the entire piece is just there. The top has wonderful use of color, but still feels unfinished. The negative space is completely ignored and truthfully there isn't enough going on in the guy to justify the lack of any background. Well I cant say any, you have A foreground and middle ground with line and color, but there is more background. I leave the second piece feeling unsatisfied. Still you did your thing and they look sick

ok wow so ... what can i say so much as already been said. i feel like you've gotten enough feedback and critiques to last a while so i am just going to give you my straight opinion. I really like the top of the martini one, the colors of the glass are almost reflecting on his shirt which is really cool but i do agree that there could be more added to both pieces. With the ameritard one i can so tell that you really spent time figuring out the lines and especially the flow of the yellow. I want to see more of a clear concentration with the pieces but there are all looking great and really unique :) amazing job :)

i am in love with the last one. i feel like he is sliding off the page and i cant stop looking at it!!!!! it is amazing i love the way you see things and draw them. its really amazing. i love how there are drips from the paint and you added pencil to add another drip which is really cool how it makes it all work. i like how you made one piece into two things. i really like the top half but i really want to see some emotion in his face and i just cant find it. i feel really lost when looking at it and it stresses me out lol :P and the pants just seem really boring...i like the line drawing but i think you should try and add more to future stuff.
